Time on servers

We've got all our workstations and servers set up to set their time from one of our servers - trouble is, it's now about five minutes fast; I suspect that the time source it is configured to use may be defunct. Sorting the source out is not really the issue; what worries me is what happens to SQL servers and AD if I suddenly set the clock right:eek:? Is it a DoItInTheHolidaysWithThemPoweredOffJustInCase job or will they cope ok with seeing the same five minutes of history twice?

You should be fine resetting it as it is not too far out, kerberos has a five minute window I think. It will be using the internal clock of the PDC emulater DC as authorative. I would suggest configuring it to look to an external time server source based of an atomic clock which will get you reliable and quality time information.

I would suggest configuring it to look to an external time server source based of an atomic clock which will get you reliable and quality time information.

 

I suggest pool.ntp.org which should give you a random(?) time server and is run by the Network Time Protocol project so less likely to fall down.
