Perfomance monitor is only good if u know what to measure and what the results mean.

In Microsoft land you can use Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM). The new version is supposedly a huge improvement over the slightly pants MOM 2000, but they've changed the licensing structure recently .

 

You now pay for the MOM server (as before) and then pay again for all servers that you monitor too. You'll be amazed to hear that it works out more expensive in nearly all cases.

 

MOM comes with a set of standard alerts for different server types (Exchange/SQL server/DCs/Plain Ol' Windows/Sharepoint/etc.) and reports to highlight which servers are most in need of upgrades. You can configure it to do just about anything if your scripting is up to it, but it does the basic stuff out of the box. There are 3rd party management packs too so you can, for example, jack it into your Dell OpenManage software if you have any Dell servers.
