Can anyone recommend a decent, free instant messenger for use between technicians and some members of staff? It would be nice to just leave a message in a free moment and not be tied to the desk - especially for all the 'urgent' (read:not time dependent) jobs...

I know this was discussed a while back, and a decent IM server/client solution was found.

Personally we set up Wildfire Jabber server and PSI clients and all works fine here. It's going on to all staff laptops to stop them sending kids down to us with problems and has worked very well so far.

I know it is possible to get Wildfird to integrate with AD too

Just downloaded Wildfire and Spark. Excelent piece of software. Server setup and working with a few teacher accounts for testing in under an hour

Wildfire and Spark installed with ease- did consider setting up a database but the embedded is working beautifully. Might even be a little overkill for what I wanted but very happy...

No probs.

I don't personally use Spark. We use PSI for teacher laptops and I have a copy of Miranda on my pen drive so I can load it anywhere but Wildfire seems to do the job.

 

Not sure if it was just me, but the only time I've upgraded Wildfire, it wiped the user/group database with it. I was using the embedded DB so I'm assuming it just overwrote it. Though I'm not desperate for new features so an upgrade isn't that critical here
