In that context, Apple define the device as the Mac or PC that is running iTunes. You can access your iTunes account from 5 different computers runnning iTunes. As long as all the iPods or iPads are using the same account, in theory there is no limit.
slancaster Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 we have registered all of our ipads, iphones and apple TVs to the same account. The 5 user limit relates to purchased software / apps / movies / music etc.
Kyle Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 Hi We registered the ipods and some ipads to the itunes account on a Windows PC and all works well. We have added some apps now (free and purchased and also some GCSE video content. We want to now use a MAC instead of a PC and keep this MAC with all the iDevices. I have set the MAC up and authorised it and have connected one iPod and all seems well. My question s what about syncing apps ete now? The MAC warns me it will replace all app data if i sync. What do i have to do to get all my apps (free and purchased) to now be on the MAC. I know how to add the GCSE content but am worried about the apps. Sorry but i am not too familiar with apple products. Can anyone give me some advice please? Thank you.
GrumbleDook Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 If you log into the iTunes store on the Mac you are going to use as the syncing / management station (for want of a better phrase) you can go to the "Purchased" area and re-download all the apps that have been purchased on that account. Remember the even if it is 'free' it is counted as purchased. When you plug the devices into a new machine, iTunes on that machine will want to wipe it and set it up again. Make sure you have downloaded all the relevant pictures, etc, have synced any purchased music or films (this cannot be re-downloaded yet ... we will have to see what iCloud does for that) and if it gives you the option to transfer any purchases then give it a whirl (these should already be downloaded from iTunes store if they are apps, as mentioned before). 1

A change was made some time ago that requires multiple licences to be bought when using apps within education but this type of licence is only currently available in the states Apple - iTunes - App Store Volume Purchase Program. Reading the apple terms and conditions iTUNES STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS it would appear you can put them on 10 devices per account but other sites say upto 5 and this https://support.assistiveware.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=50 say that you need an account per device which is unworkable. Practically there is no limit enforcement but I would get agreement from your management regarding any risk of licence infringement should you be asked to add more than 10 device to a single itunes account.
GrumbleDook Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 @face-man apparently, at the ADE event earlier in the year this point was raised and no-one at Apple had an answer. There is a West Midlands leadership event in October I am trying to get to and hope to raise the question again. I know that a number of RTCs, ASEs and ADEs are still pushing for an answer. Apple licensing might not be as complex as Microsoft ... but just as frustrating!
Sean-OC04 Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 iTunes App Store Volume Licensing is still, according to Apple in the pipeline for Europe. The way to get through the legal issue at the moment is to "gift" the application in the store for the number of devices you want to use it on. Not practical I know but it means you stay legal.

I might ask a school or two to test it, but I'm just trying to find out whether the 3 registered ID limit per device could cause a problem (if it still exists).

Apple have their own offering and the same APIs are then used by other providers (Casper, Airwatch) to provide similar or even better. The RM Tech seminars are going to cover some of this apparently (which it looks like I can't get to) and there is another Apple Leadership event next week (on Tuesday at Silverstone and a number of local schools have been invited) but Apple will say to go and talk with an ASE / AASP (such as RM, Solutions Inc, KRCS, Toucan, etc) to get advice ... or go on a training course (which a number of ASEs/AASPs run).
