Windows 7 Local Profile

Hey,

 

I have a bit of an issue, we're not using roaming profiles, were just redirecting all the folders to subfolders in the users Home directory. The issue is that when the user clicks their name from the start menu it shows the root of their local profile. Which means if they save there it will only be on the local machine. I know its possible to hide the name off the start menu, however there are other ways to get to it i can't seem to hide. Is there a way to hide/make readonly? I am also aware implementing roaming profiles would sync those files to the server, but we're a bit loathed to do that since our wireless network can be rather slow.

 

Any help would be really appreciated.

You should be able to implement the following using gpo, assuming you have 2008:

You can use the ID in the second link for user files to remove it off explorer too.

We can hide the network icon, its the local profiles root directory we are struggling to deal with.

To hide the User Files folder in Explorer you can use {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee} instead of {F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C} i.e.

 

SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum\{59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}

how would i go about making an ADM file to set this?

If you want to create an adm then have a look at the 10th (i think) post in the first link, you just need to tweak it abit.

 

If you have 2008, you can just push the reg hack using Preferences>Windows Settings>Registry. This is how i do.

I would try turning off Library Rich Features - User Configuration -> Policies -> Admin Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer -> Turn Off Windows Libraries features that rely on indexed file data

 

That might work on its own or in conjunction with the registry changes suggested above.
