LEGO WeDo msi installation target directory

I have been given LEGO WeDo v1.2 to add to my network. The CD contains an msi but this installs to the root of C: rather than the Program files dir.

 

I've opened the msi to look at the tables and changed the "TARGETDIR" value from "SoureDir" to "C:\Program Files" but it doesn't like this so was wondering whether anyone out there can give me some advice on changing this?

What happens if you try using TARGETDIR on the command line. When we're packaging something we normally try to use the command line or creating an .mst file so we don't have to modify the original .msi.

Hello Randle. I have the same requirement to install over a network. Do you have instructions for your successful method?

Do you have an RM network or Vanillla? I ask because this installation uses a setup.exe with command arguments method rather than an msi. AD won't allow you to send out packages in exe format as you may already know so this won't help if this is the case for you. Obviously there are other methods ie. WPKG, SCCM which will allow you to make a package from an exe.

 

For RM CC4 I did the following. (The readme.txt file provided with the software explains what you need to do) The ini file is only needed for an RM network.

 

- Two custom files are needed called "silent_install.txt" and "silent_uninstall.txt" which specify the company name

and serial number etc. Features can be specified within these files to install or uninstall.

 

- Do not install the "Teachers Pack" or "Activity Pack" feature as part of this package as it will error when attempting to remove from

Windows 7 computers

 

- Use the provided setup.exe file in the root directory with the following .ini file

I have a vanilla network (not RM). Assume this method will work just the same?

 

Also, I note the described does not include the activity pack as an install option and am assuming therefore that this is something that doesn't get loaded. Is there a way of achieving this without having to manually install on each system?

As mentioned, if you're just relying on AD to deploy the software then this won't work as isn't in msi format. You'll need to use WPKG (Open source) or SCCM (Loadsa money) to deploy exe packages.

 

I installed the Activities on a public share and pointed a shortcut to this as is only inoformation and not needed on each computer. If you do want this installed locally as well then you can create a separate package using the same method as the application but specify in the silent_install.txt file to only install the activities.

 

NB. This could just be an issue on an RM network so try enabling the feature on the main package so that all gets installed and see if it installs/removes without error
