Network connection says broken but isn't!

On my third Win7 machine now

 

This ones a desktop plugged into Lan.

On switch on - it searched for IP - didn't seem to get one and came up with little yellow warning triangle on the net connect icon.

 

I've spent last 30 mins, swapping conections/cables to find that its actually being given an IP by the server and the network/internet actually works even though if I hover over the icon - its says - No Internet!

 

What the flip's going on????

do you run your internet via a proxy if so it will show a ! and no internet connection sometimes (this can be altered by gpo though it will still say no internet if you hover over it)

 

computer config\admin templates\network connections\do not show the "local access only" network icon {enabled}

Yh its a bit annoying - best you can do is what sted has mentioned. I have a firewall which blocks its outbound checks!

I had the same problem.. Turns out i needed a do windows update (witch i hate doing)

I've seen the same issue when using a proxy even though the machine does have internet access, nothing to worry about.

I have had a look at our Group Policy and I can't find that setting. Is is enabled by a custom [imported] ADM?

nope it there on all the 2008r2 servers ive looked at (just looed at local group policy on this 08r2 box

That might explain it then. We are running Server 2008 Standard: SP2.

The proper way to fix this:

Group Policy, Computer Config, Admin Templates, Network, Network Connectivity Status Indicator and set the Corporate DNS Probe Host Address and the Corporate DNS Probe Host Name to your main internal DNS server.
