Logon script help

Hello all.

I have been rebuilding our deceased server:(

 

All I need to do now is create a logon script for domain users:)

 

Trouble is that I have not a clue:(:(:(

 

I need users to access their folder and a printer

 

Can anyone help pleeeeeeeeeese

 

a. I have created a shared drive S: and put their folders in the share

 

b. The server name is Server1

 

c. The domain name is PHILIPHOWARD.COM

 

d. The printer has been named Room 8 Printer and is shared from Server1

 

e. The server is 2008r2

 

f. The workstations are xp pro sp3

 

Any help would be appreciated.... Ta John

 

I did use Kixtart before but I suppose I should use the server default

If you have 2008, use group policy preferences insted of a logon script. You can set printers and folders through GPMC.

This is embarrising..........how do you use GPMC to share the 600 users to their files

Hi Brickwall

 

So long as the folder is shared, you can add a GPO preference.

 

User Config > Prefs > Windows Settings > Drive Maps

 

and

 

User Config > Prefs > Control Panel Settings > Printers

 

Set the options in there and job done :-)

It depends on what you have called your folders. If you can name the folders the same as their username you can map the drive with the %username% variable.

 

New GPO > user configuration > preferences >Windows Settings > Drive Maps. Right click in the space to the right and select new Drive Map.

 

Action = Update

Location = \\server\foldershare\%username%

Label as 'whateveryouwantittobecalled'

 

Give it a drive letter. Done.

 

 

The other option would be to use permissions to allow only the users see their folders and not everyones folders.

What I did was..............

 

a. Put all the (backed up) pupils folders into a file \\server1\users\pupils and shared them.

 

b. Then went into the AD users and computers and selected the properties for all the pupils users

 

c. Clicked on profile, then Home folder,click connect, selected S:, selected to, and typed \\server1\users\pupils then ok

 

The usernames are the same as their folder name

 

d. When I select properties for one user,(say 07a12) the home folder is \\server1\users\pupils\07a12

 

So this looks good to me (I think)

 

 

 

I have also created a new GPO as suggested see what happens in the morning

It all worked.......

 

I used the users profile to share their folders, on mass by selecting all user and using

 

 

Internet settings using Domain Policy to set up the proxy server.....

 

Printers setup using Domain Policy.....

 

Played with the policies to setup the desktop...but will do more of this when my nerves settle down

 

S: drive and \\server1\users\pupils\%username% in the profile......... Each user can access only their folder.

 

I have never used 2008 .....but with the help of this forum and googling I managed to set up the server as a file, dhcp, dns, active directory. The users can now logon access their work, internet and print

 

I used free server management software designed for schools that works a treat

 

Learned a lot...... It would help if their was an idiots guide to setting up a server

I am trying to setup the desktop settings using the Domain Policy but its not working.I must be doing something wrong...

 

Do I need to create a new policy and apply it to the network users.?

 

Will the domain Policy override a new user policy?

Policies apply in sequence from top down. So it would be Site Policy -- Domain Policy -- Users Policy.

 

Unless you specify the No Override option on the Domain policy, anything that you set in the user policy will take effect. What is it you want to do with the desktops? Background picture? Icons?

All I can see is DOMAIN POLICY on Group Policy Management:eek:

 

I want to apply settings to the domain users (pupils) xp desktops on the school domain.

 

EG

 

remove the "run" shortcut

 

add a default printer

 

Remove the "control panel" shortcut

OK, I'm assuming you have an OU folder containing all the pupil accounts? Right click this folder and choose to create a new GPO and link it here. Give it a relevant name such as Pupil policy.

 

Edit this policy and go to these places (for the 3 things you mentioned). Theres loads to play with.

 

User Configuration --> Policies --> Administrative Templates --> Start Menu and Taskbar --> Remove Run menu from Start Menu Enable the policy

 

User Configuration --> Policies --> Administrative Templates --> Control Panel --> Prohibit access to the Control Panel Enable the policy

 

User Configuration --> Preferences --> Control Panel Settings --> Printers Right click it and Go to New --> Shared Printer. Set action to be Update and type in the path \\servername\printer

 

Take the time to look through the settings, you can tie down A LOT!

I created a new policy

Applied it to a new test group and new test group user and it workjs a treat

 

As a Network Admin I should know all this stuff but as I have had no training whatsoever its a bit of a struggle.

 

School will not send me on a course
