Problems With Upgrade To XP ....Help....

I'm doing an upgrade on an office machine from W2K Pro to XP Pro. not on a domain.

 

First upgrade failed (thank you to Norton Ghost for saving the day) !.

 

Second attempt went ok, But my main administrators account is missing on the log-in page.

 

The 3 user accounts are there and accessible, I always have a second administrators account on all my machines (Just as a back-up to get in ..thank goodness I did !) , now its this second account that's showing on the log-in page.

 

I can get access to C:, Documents and settings.. my administrators account is there, but its labled Administrator and NOT what it should be.

 

If I got now to Computer Management,Users and Groups, my administrators account is there with its proper name.

 

So how do I get it on to the log-in page with out loosing any of my settings and short cuts etc.?..

I don't know if this will be any help but when on the Welcome Screen if you press CTL+ALT+DEL twice it will take you to a "domain style" login screen where you type a username and password in, this should let you into your account. Alternatively try this unhide user vbs to display any username on the welcome screen. I will also provide the hide user equivilent if you want to hide the administrator as well.

At the login screen press ctrl+alt+del. The 'Normal Login Screen' should appear.

"press ctrl+alt+del. The 'Normal Login Screen' should appear." It did after a reboot. (I have been using W2K For years, I have a lot to learn ).

 

So if I load up "xp_unhide_users.vbs" Script it should show my proper Administrators account on the log-in page ?.

 

Do I put it in the startup folder ?.

Start / run gpedit.msc

Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Scripts (Startup / Shutdown). add the script there.?

No. If you log into the machine, run the script, it will ask you the name of the user that you want to either hide or unhide from the welcome screen.

Just run the script ? I'm not used to doing that !, can you give me the info to do it.

Download the file. Open the file by double clicking on it, when you open either the hide or unhide script it will open a dialogue box where you just have to type the username you either want hidden or unhidden. Type the username, click on ok, sorted.

 

Think of it as more of an application program than a script.

Ok I take it all back this fix does not work "Enable Administrator account on Welcome Screen" from http://www.dougknox.com , my administrators account does not show on the 'welcome' screen (Only worked once).

Anybody any ideas ?.

you could try this. I don't know if it works as i have never tried it. Just googled and this came up. Worth a shot?

Now it looks like this is working, tried it on a test machine did this 'Regedit' , I rebooted 5 times and my account was there each time .

I think the first fix from 'dougs' web site only works if your Administrators account is called "Administrator" (not a good idea !).

I had to follow the note below to add my admin account name to the registry .

1. Launch Registry Editor.

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList in the Registry Editor.

3. Double-click the Administrator key in the right pane.

4. If the Administrator key doesn’t exist, right-click on the above tree in the pane, choose New, DWORD Value, name it Administrator and press .

5. Type 1 in the “Value data” box, and press .

 

Note.. that the Registry Key need not be ‘Administrator’, it could occur that the default administrator account has been renamed, in which case the Key should be whatever the new name is, e.g. ‘Joe’ DWORD 0×1
