BJG Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 (edited) I was setting up a PC, when it gave out a loud bang and I lunged for the off switch. Turning it back on again, it seemed OK, though when I opened the CD drawer the disk had been reduced to shrapnel. After removing the drive and shaking it vigorously over the bin for a while to clear out all the bits, I plugged it back in, and it now seems fine. I'm often surprised how robust electronics can be. CDs are still as useless as ever though. Edited June 2, 2011 by BJG
mac_shinobi Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I've not as yet ( touch wood ) had a disc , cd, dvd, blu ray or otherwise do that to me yet, still plenty of time though :-S
jedmondson Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Ive had that happen to me as well. Mythbusters did a myth about that back in series 1.
laserblazer Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 A few years back RM sent out a mod kit to prevent exploding CDs being fired out of the drive at great speed.
synaesthesia Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I've certainly had a CD fired out at an astonishing rate as it ejected from the tray still spinning at ludicrous speed. It was in one piece until it hit the wall behind me, narrowly avoiding turning me into a eunuch.
Gatt Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 A few years back RM sent out a mod kit to prevent exploding CDs being fired out of the drive at great speed. Ha yes I remember the RM CDRom problem. Could someone enlighten me on this one as not come across it!!
tech_guy Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 (edited) Loads of stuff on the web: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/11/business/worldbusiness/11iht-ptcd_ed3_.html?_r=1 On a slow day we deliberately put cracked CDs into drives to see if we could get them to explode.....and they did...... pshuttle Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I used to have a slot loading Pioneer DVD/CD drive and once it shattered a CD and the shrapnel was released towards my friend and I at high speed. Outrageous!
TechMonkey Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 A few years back RM sent out a mod kit to prevent exploding CDs being fired out of the drive at great speed. Those were great. I think we only bothered with the stickers in the end & not the little shield things.
