Folder Locking across Network

I keep coming across the problem that Windows will not let me rename a folder if someone else happens to have left an explorer or DOS window in that folder. Given that we have developers and servers in widely different time-zones then this is a real pain. It could obviously have been designed out of Windows by treating the folder's display name as a mere property - but that would require Windows to be designed for multi-user use instead of having it bolted on.

Now, does anyone know how I can do this without having to find out who is in there and getting them to leave? It just has to be possible but my limits stop me.

You should be able to access the file server and remove their 'handles' whcih may be open on the files. Right click my computer->manage-> then find the file sharing and open folders and files parts. In there you can see who has open files and if necessary remove the handles.

Rightclick My Computer > Manage > Shared Folders > Open Files

 

Identify the user.

 

Select Sessions > find user's session > right click > close session.

That's how I have to do it if I can't raise the person.

They might be doing important stuff in there. What I want is just to change the name with no side-effects that can get people shouty and red-faced.
