Laptops locking up

Morning all

 

We have a large quantity of Toshiba C660-1NR laptops and we are having troubles where the laptops will lock-up, the only way to get going again is to force power off, then back on again. We have downgraded/upgraded (depending on your viewpoint!) the laptops from Windows 7 to XP. On startup, Windows does not complain about improper shut down, and after checking the Event Log there is nothing there! From tests we have done, there appears to be no sign of over heating.

 

Any ideas anyone may have would be much appreciated as we are all out of them!

Is there anything in the bios? (System health, or w/e Toshiba call it)

Whatever (W/e) Just know different bios call their system health, different names.

Look at the update / scan / policy synch logs for your client AV software too. On some the defaults are idiotic and will cause performance issues without a bit of fiddling.

What are the specs of the laptops and how old? Maybe one of the components is failing and causing the lockup

Recreating XP image again now - will let you know how this goes.

Have you checked that you have the latest BIOS update and also that the latest drivers are installed on the system, random system crashes are commonly to do with BIOS fails, overheating, PSU issues or core driver issues. The easiest way to check is to ust run the updates to the firmware (sometimes hard drives have firmware updates too) and use the very latest drivers just to rule it out. You can then use system monitering software to see how the temps are while running like speedfan to make sure it is not overheating and short of that it can be power systems causing instability which may not show up under XP due to its much more primitave handleing of power saving/switching.

check the BIOS for AHCI mode...check its on compatability mode, because windows XP doesn't like AHCI

Thanks for your suggestions. Toshiba have confirmed we are on the latest BIOS - using compatibilty mode, XP would not image under AHCI. Got my new image now which I am testing - not done a lot different from last time but I will see how this goes and let you know what happens.

hope it all goes well this time around, make sure there is none of the toshiba bloat-ware installed, we have some toshiba lappys and the wireless just wouldnt work until we did a complete clean install without any of the toshiba supplied software
