The HT has given me his HTC HD Mini to setup with exchange. So far I've wasted 1 hour and 30 minutes trying to get Activesync to work and I'm now ready to throw said phone against the wall

The school is running Exchange 2010 on a Server 2008r2 box and using an ipsCA certificate. I can browse email via OWA but it asked me to install the certificate the first time I connected but now it connects without asking and works fine.

So the problem is getting Activesync to work. I’ve entered the settings which I think are correct but it doesn’t sync with the account. I’ve run the Exchange Remote Connectivity Analyzer and it passes the test for Exchange Activesync but only if I manually enter the server name and I tick Ignore Trust for SSL box as otherwise I get the error

The certificate chain didn't end in a trusted root. Root = [email protected], CN=ipsCA Global CA Root, OU=ipsCA, O=IPS Certification Authority s.l. ipsCA, L=Madrid, S=Madrid, C=ES

What can I do

I've just been getting ActiveSync working with our staff's iPhones - no-one here seems to have bought anything Android based, for some reason everyone bought an iPhone. Is the phone managing to connect to your Exchange server but not being allowed to pick up email, or is it simply failing to open a connection at all? If it managed to get a connection then you should at least get an errr message in the event log on your Exchange server, which will hopefully give you some more clues.

I think for ActiveSync to be able to automatically find your Exchange server you need to have enabled autoconfigure.yourdomain.com, otherwise you'll have to maually enter the address of your server into the client device.

I've now installed the ipsCA root certificate on the phone and now I'm getting errors in the Exchange logs.

An exception occurred and was handled by Exchange ActiveSync. This may have been caused by an outdated or corrupted Exchange ActiveSync device partnership. This can occur if a user tries to modify the same item from multiple computers. If this is the case, Exchange ActiveSync will re-create the partnership with the device. Items will be updated at the next synchronization.

I have managed to get this working with the HTC and the iPhones, with a few problems. Here are the steps that I took.

1. Tested the exchange server, Autodiscover and Active Sync with exchange conectivity test website. Passed all with green ticks.

2. On AD, opened up my username, went to properties, selected security, clicked advanced then clicked interit permissions from container.

3. when on the device, started the email address and username with a capital.

I hope that helped a little.

  • Thanks 1
