klingklang Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Our Primary school has decided to obtain an additional 48 laptops . On hearing this "exciting " news my mind now thinks about obtaining cals. Am i correct in assuming that machine licences are required . The number of users hasnt changed and the new laptops will be an addition to the existing hardware rather than a replacement. Thanks for your help Gary
TechSupp Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Been through this last year and as far as I know you will need a new CAL for every new PC that is to connect to your server. 1

Hightower Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 I think it depends on whether you have user CALs or computer CALs (and if they even still work like this!). If you have computer CALs then as it's an addition to what you currently have you will need to buy more CALs. However, if you have user CALs then because your user numbers haven't changed you shouldn't need to buy more. Like I said though, I'm not sure if they still work like this. 1
JPS Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Can you not licence based on whatever is smaller, either number of users or number of machines? ie school has 200 students and 275 PCs - you would require 200 CALs. 1
Hightower Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Thanks tech for your reply as i suspected . Right need to find prices now BTW, check out Ramesys. We buy our licences from there, never had a bother. 1
