InspireICT Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Just been in to a new school to do a bit of work and noticed that they have a site-wide unsecured wireless network. I want to raise this issue to the head ASAP. Can anyone point me to any current guidelines about wireless security? Thanks in advance.
plexer Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Err yeah that common sense says you should have some, data protection for starters. Ben
robk Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Depends whats available on said unsecured wireless network. I could be a guest filtered internet only vlan for example? Thats what we have at the moment.
InspireICT Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 It's not a guest wireless, it's not filtered, not on a VLAN. @plexer - I realise it's common sense, I was just hoping to find some supporting documentation.
robk Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Ah, in that case yes I see what you mean. Data protection as @plexer has mentioned is probably the best way forward. 1

InspireICT Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 Sorry I haven't worded my query well enough. I know that the wireless should be encrypted and that the reasons are pretty obvious but I've just started supporting the school today and was hoping that there was some kind of document out there that I could show to the head to support my concerns, e.g. something like "Bectas guidance on wireless security" or "LGfL wireless security guidelines". I just can't find any such document.
plexer Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Data Protection and Ofsted safe guarding should be more than enough for this. Ben
