Restoring AD

Hi Guys

 

We now have two Server 2008 R2 domain controllers up and running.

 

I am trying to put together a disaster plan and need a "walk through" for restoring the complete active directory

 

Help would be appreciated

Good idea, however if you have two DC's, hopefully you won't need to bar the FSMO roles should they fail.

 

You should never be in a position where you have to do a full AD recovery if processes are in place.

My plan for this is "restore the entire DC from the full backup I do every night".

 

Windows Server Backup is built in and will image the entire server for you to a second drive. This can be external, and can even be a NAS on the other side of the site (as in my case).

We do the same thing here using NT backup to a nas across the site every night, and we also have backup-exec doing differentials mon to thurs and full every fri to disk and tape.

 

Should one server go down we can restore from the last good backup, and let AD replicate from our other DC's. Should total disaster hit the site we have offsite backups (encrypted) as well.

Just put the DCs in separate physical locations and you won't have a problem.

 

Or virtualize one of them and take an image once a term.
