I have just found out (to my utter joy) that it runs fine on a GeForce GTX460. Just not on a Radeon which is what it was running on before. I didn't even need compatability mode!

Everything by Sensible Software. Sensible Soccer, Cannon Fodder, Wizkid... all brilliant.

 

Syndicate on the Amiga is probably a defining part of my imagination as well, even though I was rubbish at it at 8 years old.

 

Teenage years were spent in Duke Nukem 3D and the Build editor, which I'm surprised no-one has mentioned yet!

UFO: Enemy Unkown (X-Com: UFO Defence for those over the pond.

 

Definitely! I lurve the X-Com series. And another Jullian Gollop game for the ZX Spectrum - Chaos (gr8 to play with m8s).

 

Also Age of Empires 1,2+3, and Unreal Tournament are essential games for any LAN party.

 

Recently been playing the old NES game Excite Bike, but revamped in 3D on the 3DS, I'm also gonna download good old GB Donkey Kong for the 3DS Virtual Console soon (once I get my head out of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D).

Transport Tycoon was brilliant, if you loved it give Open-TTD a spin. The signalling has been much improved and you can play online.

 

Stepping away from stratergy, you gotta love Lucasarts adventures stuff.

Nothing yet, DK2 did work under XP untill I installed a graphics card. DK sort of works under DosBox, but has big slowdown issues on the later levels. I've been meaning to build a Windows 98SE virtual machine for these things.

OpenTTD - Run a small server for friends from time to time (Easiest way to upgrade i have found for Rail-Tram-Mono is to get all your trains to return to depot making sure at least 1 Depot on each line is already upgraded/inacessible, once all trains are in the depot upgrade the entirity of the line then re-build the trains in the upgraded depot and copy the instructions from the now defunct trains (Copy orders - release new train - deleate old train, saves duplicationg orders to trains that can't shift that particular type of goods))

 

Xcom - Love it got the collectors edition (Enemy unknown, TFTD, Apoc, Interceptor) though i never realy used any weapon other than lazors (Gotta love the no ammo issue) Did anyone ever play/compleate this on the insane difficulty?

Its gotta be the original FPS of Quake 2 or Doom. Also, loved the capture the flag and paintball mods for Quake :-) ahhhh the good old days of after school Quake Paintball club (to satisfy the parents that we werent playing blood and guts games :-))

FIFA international soccer for the mega drive, great football game for its time. Best part was if you fouled someone you could run away from the ref so he couldnt give you a card.

How old are we talking? I recently went on a bit of an eBay spending craze (the missus wasn't happy, but that's another story) and bought a NES, a Megadrive, a SNES, a Dreamcast and a few PS1 games (to play on my "old" PS3)...

 

Most of the games I love have already been mentioned, but I'm going to throw Terminator 2 on the NES in to the mix. Granted, you can complete it in 1 hour flat and it doesn't really vary much, but there's just something about that game for me... I completed it last night in fact

 

Also, Maniac Mansion (also NES, believe you could get it on Megadrive in the states...) is an amazing game, so in depth for the time too with multiple endings and story changing depending on your choices (even on your choice of players at the start of the game!)

 

EDIT: I'm bookmarking this post and working through to see what I can pick up on eBay now

I've just read this whole thread and am completely shocked at the lack of RPG's and of no mention whatsoever of one game in particular, in my opinion still the best game ever made: Final Fantasy VII!
