Folder Redirection and Offline Files Long Login times

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So it seems I have come up againt my first major stumbling block with W7.

I have an OU, Roaming Laptops which allows offline files to sync the redirected folders.

This means that staff (when away from the school) have a full copy of their Documents available.

This worked fine in my initial tests, however when I put 4GB of files into the folders the machines take 20+ minutes to log on, hanging at 'Applying Folder Redirection Policy'. There is a lot of disk activity going on as well as network activity, so I assume that a sync is occuring.

The users only experience this when logging onto a 'Roaming machine'.

Anyone got any ideas on how to stop this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Zero Hour,

The share has 'Only the files and programs that users specify are available offline'

Then I adminstratively assign the folders to be cached through a gpo and also take away the ability for users to assign there own folders.

This worked and logon times are acceptable (30-40 seconds) during my intial testing, however I only tested it with 10 files!

Just tried it on one of our laptops, login time reduced from 10-15 minutes (yes it was that bad!) to under a minute! If I could thank you a 100 times for this then I would :-)
