[ubuntu] Network Monitory Stuff for Ubuntu

Right then, currently I have a Spiceworks installation on my Windows Box, but as I have a number of old machines lying around, I'm planning to make an Ubuntu (or other flavour if it would be more appropriate such as CentOS) server that will look after the network inventory and helpdesk etc and allow the Windows box to focus more on the day to day (they're not the best windows boxes - entry levels of RAM etc, so the less I have them doing the better I would think).

 

So, go on, suggest to me some tools that I could use as I know that Spiceworks isn't currently supported on *nix (though there are some tutorials out there for using WINE but none seem hugely successful ..

Try Request Tracker for ticket management and Nagios and Cacti for network monitoring. All three are superb tools.

Nagios works on ubuntu and is easy to install. It looks good and is flexible enough to (probably) meet the needs of most schools networks. Configuration is a bit of a pain and I found it quite a steep curve trying to get my head round how things should best be structured.
