If i set the switch for an LACP trunk do i need to configure anything on the Windows Server - at the moment we are using HP network team but it doesn't actually give 2gbs network speed.

 

If i set the properties of the network team to 802.3ad Dynamic with Fault Tolerance should that do it?

on esxi you set it to route by ip hash,

 

dunno about the HP teaming, i found it more hassle than its worth, try automatic load balancing or switch assisted? (i think, from memory)

 

i'll xendesktop in and have a look, (edit: can't not hp teaming not installed any more)

depends on how the switch is setup

this is how it is set - the Reason LACP is set as disabled is becuase thats dynamic LACP which the switch works out which ports are together

 

whereas i have setup so that it specified which ports are in the trunk

that sounds/looks like it is the same as how I have our switch set for the ESX boxes.

each specified as 802.3ad are labelled as dynamic, i would hazard a guess at the switch assisted like I said earlier, tbh I would just try 1 then the other, obviously a bit tricky over VPN especially if its the wrong one :) and you lose your connection,

 

if you have to do it out of hours, can you wack another nic in it, just for remote desktop / vnc plugged into a another switch as a safety option

i did the esx boxes during the holidays.

 

do you remember the stack of 6 switches in the server room? I've got another fibre card for that of ebay and i'm going to aggregate that link, and I've had that for 5 weeks now, Im just waiting for easter, its easier no pressure then.

Yeah I managed to do one of the vm hosts while it was live (only running wsus and the Alan server at the time as i had migrated others over) and it only dropped 1 ping to the servers while i setup the nics on that for bonding.

 

I'm going to have a play with both (plus talk to alex and see how he has it setup as he has same switch) although he only has 1 window server on his network!

You need to set it up both on the switch and on the server (using the NIC management software)

 

Link aggregation doesn't give you 2gb/s it gives you 2x1gb/s. ie each client can only receive at 1gb/s, but 2 clients can concurrently receive at 1gb/s.

A single data stream can't exceed 1GB/s which can be important when looking at things like data transfer between servers with teamed NICs or SANs as the effective rate is still limited to only 1GB/s. For SANs this means the use of multipathing in order to increase speed.

sorry i forgot that part of his post, i thought it was in response to what I was saying to him about my stack of 6 six switches
