Live@Edu and Online MSN Messenger problem due to Live.com domain.

We have just implemented Live@Edu email in our school for Staff and Students.

 

In order to get it to work for students they need access to the live.com domain (it was previously blocked on our web filter).

 

However, I have just discovered that by unblocking live.com it allows them to log-in to on-line MSN Messenger!!!

 

I have already disabled MSN Messenger from within Live@Edu using Powershell, but that doesn't stop them going to the live.com website and logging-in to MSN with their own account...aaagghhh!!

 

Any solutions/suggestions people?

Live@edu is built on Exchange Online which is a totally different platform to Hotmail. In order to give access to the Live service features like SkyDrive and Groups every user is provisioned using the Live ID mechanism which requires access to those domains.

 

Students access their Exchange Online mailboxes by navigating to http://www.outlook.com, but filtering all of the Live properties will negatively impact the service.

If so could you let me know what you did as we are having exactly the same issue here - the main problem seems to be that messenger is launched from

office.live.com

which is a URL that Live@edu and Live.com share

Hi -

 

I am not at work today so I cannot check, but as far as I remember we blocked http://messenger.live.com for students and that effectively 'broke' their ability to use MSN Messenger online.

 

They can still use Live@edu but MSN Messenger doesn't work anymore.

Sorry to bug you again but I added that one to our filters and it doesn't seem to have had the desired affect - would you mind double checking that there weren't any other URLs that you added as well?
