File Server

After being given 2 computers i want to now build a file server what distro should i use i have been looking at Debian. i am looking at accessing it with active directory. I am new to this and at the moment it is just an experement. 2 computers have 3 40gb drives each but dont want to go down the windows 2003 route just for a file server.

I've got an ubuntu box here that's doing file and print for our school. If you just wanted to authenticate against AD and didn't need to do printing you only need samba, winbind and kerberos.

Ok i know thisw a old thread but have been playing with ubuntu now for a few months and it looks really good i only have one problem now i cant get samba to work( i am looking at using nix machine as file server) have got internal web sorted no problem. What i am looking for in the nix machine that we can host our Teacher and Student shared directory on. the student shared area has for sub folders year 3, 4, 5 and 6. but i dont know where to start have read and tried this page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto but i dont know where to go from here( i have learnt a lot but still at basics) i do have one dc ad and exchage but want to put some of the file burden on nix machine

You want to use something called Winbind so that the Linux server understands your Windows network. You will also need Samba so that you can share your filesystem with the Windows clients.

 

IIRC there are tutorials on the Samba site on exactly this. You might also want to check the Winbind section of my PyKota HOWTO out (I know it isn't perfect and it's not exactly what you want but it would be a start).

thats cool i am off to try and do it today. One of the things i am a bit confused on is once it is all set up how do i set the share up i know how to do it on active directory using windows machines but to do it via linux for a windows machine this is the bit i am not to sure on doing. or do you put a admin share on add it active directory the set the pomissions from there for users. sorry if this is the most basic question but this is the only thing i dont understand.

To create samba shares you need to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf (similar format to an INI file) - there's a bit information here

You might want to have a look at Openfiler as an off the shelf Linux based solution.

Best bit is you can retool it as a SAN at a later date if your storage requirements grow.

wow that looks just what i am looking for i want a nas but have got so many old hd and pcs about have decided to make use of them and openfiler looks great. Have been trying to get Kerberos to work for two days it just keeps telling me its not correct when i try with kinit

I think this is a case sensitive issue, or some other misconfiguration can you post the /etc/krb5.conf file

i have pm you as i have had to put server names in it if you can think of a way of posting it without all the server name post it but due to the problem i have explaned at the end i dont know how to put it ie ping one addy get another returned. but when i ping from windows box get same ping

ie nix box ping server1.domain.local

ping returnes curric1.domain.domain.com 10.10.10.1

 

ping from windows box ping server1.domain.local

ping returnes server1.domain.local 10.10.10.1

i know a little but this is just so confusing i have never have seen this before

ok i am the plonker lol when i was logging into server was typing kinit [email protected]l that did not work the i had a idear tried [email protected]L it was cybernerd that gave me the idear and bingoooo it worked.

now all i am thinking about is the thing with the ping thats just weard
