Client not able to resolve short name

I have 2 domains

everything has been working well for months untill recently

trust is able to be verified

server1 and server 2 are able to resolve all name

clients on server 2 are unable to resolve short names

 

the clients on dom2 are not able to resolve short name

when you type the full name in it works

server1 = shortname

server1.domain.edu this will work

This can be by design, in a multiforrest environment you should be using fqdns anyway. You could work around it by using GPO to add the extra DNS suffix to all of the affected machines, at that point they will have a try of both and should make short names work again.

Has anything changed with your WINS setup? this will be used to resolve the short name and if it's not working then this is one thing that will fail (but almost everything else will work fine so WINS can fail without you realising)

Thank you I added the extra dns suffix and it now works
