Were going down the same route and have talked to Virgin at length ... Their business lines are up to 10 or 20 meg which means that unlike a leased line the speed can vary. They have told us that the 10 meg line should average around the 8 meg mark. With the contention ratios that they have, for us at least it shouldnt make a lot of difference as our average over the last month has been less than 1 meg with a peak of 2.5 .... We upload very little so upload speeds are not an issue ... We are going to have 2 10 meg business lines with fixed IP's (so we can host our own web site and vle) and telephone lines included. Thats one for live and one for reduncancy in case of trouble ... We are going to get rid of our current very expensive telephone system and install our own pabx for around £500 (very easy these days) with 3 incoming and 16 extensions. Filtering has yet to be decided but its going to be Smoothwall or something similar. Overall the saving in leased line costs and telephone costs will be in the order of £4000.00. All this of course is only if Virgin have their cable in the locality ........

We dont have a VLE as yet and will look at the speed issues when we decide to get one ... The web site is not heavily used and most access is out of school hours ... again we will monitor and upgrade to 20 meg if needed .. Of course the 50 meg option will be available soon !!! If all else fails then we can use an external hosting comapny for both ... there are many of them and they are cheap these days

Indeed but there are benefits to hosting internally also. I assume Virgin aren't tying you in to a contract then?

Yes there will be a contract but it will be for the provision of broadband internet access plus phones ... Where we decide to host our website and vle is nothing to do with Virgin ..
