So you've bought a new toy.....do you dismantle it?

How likely are you to dismantle a new toy to see how it works / what the internals are like?

 

(prompted by a weekend stripping down the motorbike and rebuilding the front caliper mainly "because I can").

It depends on price and I wouldn't do it when it is brand new, have to use it first.

 

Mind you, I think it is part and parcel of been male, having to tinker to see how it works. OH mum calls it boys doing tinkering when I go to OH Dad's barn of "toys"

Absolutely. Of course it comes apart. It's all well and good seeing what's on the screen or what it does, but knowing what's inside that makes it tick is something else. It might just be the same collection of chips and buttons you see in other kit but just seeing it for yourself makes it a little more tangible, if that makes sense.

 

 

 

Oh, and within a couple of weeks a friend will have bought one, broken it and I'll have to take it apart to actually fix it. Hopefully by which time i've already gotten the experience of opening it without making it look like a Dixon's reject

oh YES. Missus bought me (well, officially 16mo daughter, but you know how it goes) a 2010 re-release of the BigTrak. I've been forced to do an initial teardown to silence the speaker, as it's too loud and terrifies Isabel! Just as I remember it, pretty much. Heh.

 

Most things get at least a partial disassembly within a month, as curiosity beats me. My second Astra lasted all of..the time it took to drive home before I had the injection manifold/throttle body/DIS pack etc off because a) it ran badly, and b) It's a drive by cable C14SE Multipoint injection, and I was curious as to how it stacked up against the main car (Z16SE Mpi, drive by wire). Same system in effect, different operational strategy, several improvements in execution etc.

Buy something new > get it home > unbox it > test it > take it apart > modify if wanted > put it back together > frown in frustration as something now doesn't work > take apart again > put back together > smile in elation that it all works again > start the process again with the software.........

 

....and after 4 days finally use the thing for what I bought it for in the first place

I'll happily build anything and would love the idea of a Kit Car one day (when I've got a garage to build it in).

 

But I can't say I have a great feeling or need to dismantle the Microwave, or my 37" Samsung TV, or electric strimmer on arrival.

 

And as yet I have not felt the need to do anything to my Xbox, PS3, Wii, Laptop, or mobile phone.....

 

If it breaks though, the first thing that happens is I poke about the innards to see what's broken

Heh. Netbook - Original AA1. Stripdown, 1 week later. Upgrade to max RAM (1.5gb). Next week, did the same to Jems. Also change out the damned Atheros card..yuk.

 

Mobile..Acquired a new (to me) K800i. Next day, stripdown and clean, hunt down and reflash firmware with later, non locked revision. Same as when I got my Motorola MPX200 - find iffy Winver upgrade, hit apply. WM5 ran quite well.

 

Kitcar, yes..I know that feeling.. Would settle for being able to find a way of getting EasyTronic system (automated manual shift) onto a non-easytronic non CANBUS vehicle..they appeal to me, but not in the MK5 Astra.
