montycv3 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 hi, i work in a school in coventry, we run XP across the network. im trying to install StarSpell 2.2 from Fisher-Marriot software, i have modified permissions to have full control for everyone using this software's database, but here is the problem; when a student try's to run this software they get: Run-time error '3050': Could not lock file you ok this message and it closes the software, dead. any ideas? thanks guys
Steve21 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Have you set the permissions on the share aswell as the file? (aka could they write a .txt file there?) Assuming they don't have access to where the share is normally. Steve
montycv3 Posted March 21, 2011 Author Posted March 21, 2011 thanks but still no luck, bit of background: this program was installed via a active directory GPO and the students access it via redirected shorcut through a student profile layout. it is installed to the C:/ on all the relevant computers and works fine on an admin profile but the eroor occurs when trying to use the student accounts.

But can a student write a file directly to a C area (preferably that folder)? Like a .txt file etc? Just worth checking. Steve
montycv3 Posted March 21, 2011 Author Posted March 21, 2011 for security reasons students aren't able to access C:/
Steve21 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Well generally if access db's etc are triyng to be locked, they create a new temporary file/folder with the lock information. So if they can't write it, would explain why it can't be locked. Admins have write access, so they could write it etc. Try to make the entire folder writable, and test it. Would rule out other items, if it works. Steve 1

Steve21 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 No prob Sorry if it went a bit in circles, but yeah way access locks them is weird. Steve 1
