Ok trying to create new domain structure to accomodate the staff domain

my idea is to have a root domain with DNS and DHCP, and with subnets for Staff & Pupil networks.. and 2 child domains (staff & Pupils)

Now, heres the problem, I have created the subnets and sites in ADSS and added the relevent DC's to the sites

Problem is - the respective PC's dont pick up DHCP addresses.. they just return APIPA addresses..

I know you can use ADSS to determine what DHCP scope is used, but dont know how to set it up

The only other thing i think it can be is the fact that this is all on Virtual Server - except the root DC which is the host OS, with the child DC's as VPC guest OS's

I am gonna try and get enough physical Pcs to try it out that way too..

Not sure about ADSS but the way I know of it working is if theres a router between the two subnets the router passes the bootp traffic and it knows which scope to get an address from because of its originating interface on the router.

Are you testing this for your own evil and (as all techies have one) twisted imagination, or are you seriously considering this kind of complexity for what could and perhaps should be accomplished with those little logical reflections of your organisation called OUs?

I'm just thinking out loud that this kind of thing is best left to multiple physical sites rather than one site where you just need a logical representation of your organisation. So, instead of having domains for Staff and Students, stick with OUs for Staff and Students.

Maybe you *need* the physical rather than logical structure? I don't know your situation. But to me you are just making lots of work for yourself.

Hey- good luck in any case :-)

@kingswood It was a bit of both really, though rethinking it all now - think i'll stick to DHCP servers in the relevent domains and just ensure the VLANS are properly configured.

The reason Im doing this is that at present we control the pupil domain, but our LEA control the staff domain - and snce their pretty much useless, we are going to take control of that as well.
