mwbutler Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 (edited) Hi all We have a Mac Server (v 10.6.6?) which was integrated into our Windows Network by an outside company. They also setup 16 imacs and after a bit of hassle everything was working fine. Recently the Workgroup preferences has not been been applying to the imacs. EG nothing in the dock. I changed the home page and proxy recently in WGM and these settings have also not filtered down to the imacs. I have double checked all proxy settings, dock settings, home page settings I could find in WGM and I cannot find any conflicting old settings. I have tried using the "mcxrefresh" command and this doesn't help at all. I don't know much about Macs (am still very much learning!) so I am not sure what to do from here. I've tried searching google and here but haven't had much luck with finding a solution. If anyone could offer me any advise that would be great. Cheers Matt *Edit* In Library/managed preferences/ the complete.plist file has the old home page and proxy settings in it. I've tried deleting everything in thant folder then running mcxrefresh but the old incorrect settings keep getting pulled down. Now I am completely stuck! Edited March 4, 2011 by mwbutler
mwbutler Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 (edited) Problem solved! The company gave the server two different names - mac_server and mac-server (is this normal for macs??) but as per their instructions we only had mac_server added to DNS. Adding mac-server into DNS then rebooting the mac server and imacs fixed the problem. The dock, home page, proxy etc are now all correct! Edited March 4, 2011 by mwbutler
rbelson Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 There is a strange "phenomenon" where when binding a Mac with a hostname with a "-" in it, the AD plugin will often replace this with a "_". It is very strange and if not spotted a "changeip -hostname" should fix it retrospectively however this is not a perfect fix. 1
mwbutler Posted March 7, 2011 Author Posted March 7, 2011 Thats for the explaining the cause of the problem, rbelson.
HodgeHi Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Be aware that when using DeployStudio to deploy images they use the "-" to separate the name and the appended number for the client name when using it for host naming. For example, iMac-01, iMac-02 etc. I've never seen the issue mentioned though.
