dgsmith Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 We're pondering buying a bunch of HP CP2025 colour laser printers although as money is tight, it seems to be alot cheaper to buy the non-network (base) models then additionally buy external jetdirect boxes from ebay cheaply. Normally we'd use 620n cards but these printers don't have EIO slots. What I want to know is how reliable these external jetdirect boxes are and whether we can connect to the printers and get the same graphical interface/level of information you get with an internal card/ethernet? We find it very useful to be able to connect to printers to get toner levels, status messages though I am not sure if the external jetdirect cards via USB can extract/show this info from the printers?
dgsmith Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 Someone must have used/be using external jetdirects!
SYNACK Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 No, you won't get the moniters etc, you also lower the reliability compared to an internal one, they cause problems. 1
dgsmith Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 Bummer, so there is no way at all to get supplies status when using external printer server? Would something like papercut or jetadmin pick this up or is it just impossible for the printer so send this info with external jetdirect via USB?
round2it Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 (edited) we use jet direct boxs on our hp3550 flawless for 5 years still going strong no toner info though Edited March 3, 2011 by round2it 1
bigjb Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Personally would stop away from external print servers - I find its something else for people to fiddle with or unplug!! 1

No, you still get driver status on some but this does not pipe into snmp for consumption by papercut. You should get basic status like generic toner low/paper out but not much more. The hp units are alright but it adds another three leads to come loose etc and cheaper printers can mess over usb to a device like that without the full driver to wipe it when it messes itself. It comes down to spending the money now or spending it later in the form of time, replacement units etc. 1
