Perc/6i Battery dead - should i be worried

I rebooted our main file server over the weekend and have got warnings now that the battery on the raid controller is low. How worried should i be about the warnings?

If i replace the battery will it lose it's settings? Never had a low battery warning in all the years of running raid.

I believe this refers to the battery that keeps the cache on the RAID card alive if power to the server dies. When power is restored and the server is booted the RAID card will flush the data in the cache to the disks. You don't actually have to have a battery on a RAID card and it'll only be used if you have write caching enabled.

Best advice? Check your RAID caching settings and call Dell (0844 338 1200) to see what they advise. If the server is under warranty they may replace the battery and just tell you to swap it the next time you can schedule downtime.

Thanks for that, the server isn't under warrenty any more but will give our account manager a ring see if they will offer some advice. I believe write caching is enabled but better check that out quickly.

Glad that it isn't the end of the world, was a nice message to find first thing on a Monday.

Yeah, never fun on a Monday morning. :(

Drop me a PM if Dell can't/won't help you out with advice or replacement parts, the supplier we use here can normally source what you need and get a Dell rep to confirm it.

Cheers,

Chris
