[sims] SIMS SQL 2008 Migration

Does anyone have a step by step guide for installing full SQL for a sims migration? what accounts need setup etc?

 

i have been looking at doing this migration and was wondering if i should be installing a new instance of 2008 on the same server as the 2005 instance or whether i should run the upgrade option on the SQL 2008 install? I plan to use the migration tool but wish to have Full SQL rather than the capita provided SQL

 

can anyone point me in the right direction? i am using server 2008r2

There is a standard document from Capita, and also on a discussion thread on SupportNet there was a detailed explanation of all the tick boxes that need checking on install. It's different to the Express edition on the instructions.

 

When you say server 2008 R2, are you referring to Windows Server (supported) or SQL Server (supported from Spring release, mid march)?

 

Usually, the easier way to do it is to install a second instance on the original server, as the migration is easier this way. You can disable the old instance once happy all works, and users are ok. Check some of the other threads on here and allow plenty of time. Take backups etc.

Vik, yea i mean Windows Server 2008 R2 Not SQL R2

 

I have installed and seviced packed SQL 2008 to SP1 and have used the sims migration utility.

 

SIMS runs fine on the server however it doesnt work on the desktop machines, fails with reason 0

 

i have checked the connect.ini and it is pointing to the correct database?

 

any ideas?

Managed to fix that, the SQL browser service hadnt started correctly.

 

Just trying to redirect the learning gateway, anyone done this before?

found out how to do the redirect however even as an administrator of SLG i do not have the correct permissions so i will have to contact capita

How did you manage to run your Census without already upgrading to SQL 2008?

 

My colleague wrote the documents on the slatash dot net filepantry - without looking at them I can tell you they will be very comprehensive indeed.

Apparently although capita dont support SQL 2005 anymore it does still work, but it wont work after the spring release so i am told.

 

The documentation is very good and has helped a great deal.

 

Just the SLG to sort but that has to be a capita made change.
