Limiting User Download by MB Quota

Our firewall (fortiguard) does not allow this feature. They have no plans to create this feature.

 

We want to limit our users to 5gb / data per term and 200mb data per day.

 

Is there any other (simple) solution that we can use to achieve this?

 

I dont want to create any new proxies, or anything like that.

What do they actually download? Or are you talking about general internet usage?

 

For example here we dont let pupils 'download' anything (music, movies, whatever), but obviously general browsing would come off any sort of limit / quota like your talking about.

 

It seems a little OTT to actually limit, essentially, how much browsing they can do by a data limit as if they access something like youtube for educational purposes that's going to quickly run down their daily quota, once it's gone what are you going to say "sorry, your done for the day" even though they have no way or knowing how much they have used? It may cause problems....

 

I'm also not sure how you would go about integrating such a quota on a per use basis from a firewall.......even something like Smoothwall can't do this AFAIK....?

the firewall gives daily reports on usage data, I wouldnt think it would be much of an effort to add a check that if that data exceeded a set limit then deny access...

 

We block youtube and streaming video for students, except for the likes of the ABC edu sites etc, but some kids who are off sport for the afternoon or stuff like that just sit on those sites for hours on end..
