beebs Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Hey guys, Sorry if this is a repeated subject but: Im looking for a free piece of software in which i can use the Librarian's Bar code scanner to scan the bar codes found on most of the equipment on the site into a microsoft excel Spreadsheet? Im sure theres many of you who have done this? Many thanks!
plexer Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Without knowing what type of scanner it is and what its interface is this question is hard to answer. We have a usb barcode scanner for asset management and it just outputs text to whatever application you happen to be using, word, excel, internet explorer etc... Ben

Most new barcode scanners will work as USB "keyboards", so you can just plug them in to any computer, scan a barcode, and the scanner "types" the code to the computer. No drivers or software to install, the computer just sees a standard keyboard. If yours is too old to do this, throw it out and get a new one off eBay - I think they're under £30. 1
teejay Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Be careful, barcode scanners for Library systems will be set up with specific pre/post barcode codes and set up to use with specific barcode types. Stuff this up and you'll have a very unhappy Librarian

Stuff this up and you'll have a very unhappy Librarian As i am aware, they are just Plug & Play ones which work with ALICE.
the_quick Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Agreed and can confirm, USB plug and play works without a problem with Alice, no configuration is needed. Same scanner will scan to any other application. I used mine with MS Access

vikpaw Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Alice! Alice! who the flip is Alice? hehe! That would be Oliver's older sister We use Oliver now I'm pretty sure it takes barcodes straight off, however i remember for some application having to enclose text with asterisks. What a *pain*
