Restoring from server 2003

Getting my new server 2008 soon, so planning for migration of data. If I do a ntbackup on current server 2003 to an external drive can I restore on the new server? (I only have ntbackup)

Or would it be better to do a network drive backup on a windows 7 laptop using my external drive, does that use the same windows backup that server 2008 uses?

There is an ntbackup restore utility for server 2008 that is available from the microsoft download centre which you can use to restore your backups form server 2003.

The good thing about you doing this is if you wish to keep any file permissions in tact then you can do so providing your doing this with the same Domain Controller or/ If this box is going to be your new Domain Controller and your not doing a Migration then obviously you won't need to look at that but it's always nice and handy for people whom have lots of security permissions in place.

 

If your doing a Migration of Domain Controllers also then again be nice to keep permissions and such in tact.

There is a utility I think ts called the windows server shared folder migration utility. Run this on the server 2003 box and it has a nice GUI. It will migrate your files to the new server with permissions and recreate the share for you using the same permissions.
