So DVI is the all new (well, not exactly new anymore, but you know what I mean!) format for displays. What exactly is the advantage of it over VGA? Can you really notice any difference between the 2?

Don't know but the last new laptop we bought only had a DVI connector on it but as it was an analogue one as well with the correct adapter it can still be plugged into a vga projector etc...

DVI is the result of trying to fix the defficencies in the VGA connection standard when coupled with LCD flat panel displays. Simply put, DVI results in higher picture quality when used with LCD flat panels.

 

You'll likely see DVI connectors being phased out in the future to make way for HDCP compliant HDMI then eventually UDI connections.
