Scavenging DNS records, Is it a good thing?

Just needed another opinion.

 

We currently have Scavenging DNS records turned off, when we looked at it at the DNS, we had lots of duplicate records, and we found that the network can grind to a halt at times especially when everone logs in. One forum suggested maybe the DNS records are in a mess.

 

Does anyone think it maybe worth giving DNS a clean, to see if it helps the matter, I noticed we have scavenging turned off, Can anyone tell me if there are benefits of having this turned on?

Yes, you really should. DNS record aging only removes records that have been inactive for 7 days by default. So it's never going to remove anything that's still relevant/correct.

To be honest, it's shocking that DNS doesn't scavenge by default. I can't immediately think of any situation where you wouldn't want this.

 

The co-relation between the scavenging cycle and DHCP scope lease length is important, but I'm not confident enough to tell others how to do it.
