SimpleSi Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 (edited) After severe peer pressure from an EduMod I've decided to try and root my Desire Downloaded unrevoked and the USB ROOT DRIVER Thingy - tried to use unrevoked and got errors Decided that it was because my Desire is out of memory and deleted a few things and got the unrevoked process to isntall and run - 25 device reboots later unrevoleked says its done and my devie is now rooted Si Edited April 21, 2011 by ZeroHour
SimpleSi Posted January 22, 2011 Author Posted January 22, 2011 Just doing a Nandroid backup first - very geeky stuff
linkazoid Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 I can highly recommend the Oxygen Rom by AdamG on xda. XDA Developers I'm using the latest RC6 Gingerbread build. Is a ASOP rom so no bloat. Everything works great except for Video Recording. Video recording will be fixed when Nexus1 get the Gingerbread OTA update as some video libs are needed from the build. Michael
SimpleSi Posted January 22, 2011 Author Posted January 22, 2011 Everything works great except for Video Recording. I'm not geeky enough for that I want everything to work at least as well as standard HTC/Vodaphone latest update (there's nothing in gingerbread that is seems to be of any practical use on a desire so until its rock solid stable , no point in likes of me going for it) Si
SimpleSi Posted January 22, 2011 Author Posted January 22, 2011 OK - I've backed up my sd card to my PC so I'm off to start updating the rom (Just checking if I need to update radio first - don't think so but just checking Si
SimpleSi Posted January 22, 2011 Author Posted January 22, 2011 Ok - its time to do the wipe and install the new rom
SimpleSi Posted January 22, 2011 Author Posted January 22, 2011 Its always the non-tech stuff that does you in! I've got it up and running with the cyanogne mod but I can;t restore from my Sprite Backup (that I paid £3 for!) as it won't re-activate. Tried contacting the help desk - its says my password isn't valid even though I've got the text in front of me!!!!
SimpleSi Posted January 22, 2011 Author Posted January 22, 2011 Time to give up - root ing and loading custom mod rom has worked - jsut cant restore from my backup due to admin reasons Si
LosOjos Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Time to give up - root ing and loading custom mod rom has worked - jsut cant restore from my backup due to admin reasons Si That's a shame Si, but at least you're in the world of Cyanogen now! You said you've backed up your SD card so I'm presuming it's just your apps that you lost? If that's the case, don't think of it as losing them, think of it as spring cleaning - go and install all the apps you use again (the ones you miss, you probably never used anyway!) BTW, Titanium is an awesome backup tool, highly recommend it. Plus you can set it up to store backups on your DropBox so it doesn't matter if you're SD card fails on you
SimpleSi Posted January 24, 2011 Author Posted January 24, 2011 That's a shame Si, but at least you're in the world of Cyanogen now! Sometimes it seems a dark and strange place You said you've backed up your SD card so I'm presuming it's just your apps that you lost? If that's the case, don't think of it as losing them, think of it as spring cleaning - go and install all the apps you use again (the ones you miss, you probably never used anyway!) Your dead right about the spring clean Just got a few problems 1. some of my contacts have dissapeared - so obviuosly not all were Google contacts 2. Lost all my previous SMS conversations so I'm having to manually find contacts to start them off again (and the stock app doesn't seem to handle multiple destinations like the HTC one did) 3. I had a profile manager that did what I wanted but I can't remember its name (The one I had let you either keep a default setting, change it to something or disable it for everything from wi-fi to screen brightness) The annoying thing was to pay £3 for a backup prog before I rooted (because no free one seem to do the job ). In hindsight I should have then used Titanium at that point I just need to gain access to my backup (Sprite) account and I should be good to go except Mr Sprite is saying - who are you regards Si
Domino Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Yay! you've taken the plunge! RE: contacts, have you tried checking the SIM contacts for the missing ones? Not used sprite backup so can't advise with it I'm afraid, but as above Titanium is probably the way to go in the future
SimpleSi Posted January 24, 2011 Author Posted January 24, 2011 RE: contacts, have you tried checking the SIM contacts for the missing ones? Where do I find them? (Yours is one of the ones lost - and that's the second time its happend!) Si
Domino Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Where do I find them? (Yours is one of the ones lost - and that's the second time its happend!) Si In that case I'm not telling - lest I get another 1am sms... Open contacts, hit menu, select import/export and you can see the various sources available to get them from.
SimpleSi Posted January 24, 2011 Author Posted January 24, 2011 Open contacts, hit menu, select import/export and you can see the various sources available to get them from. Nada there in Sim card - just some old vcards on the sdcard I'll get them when I get my backup data back Si
SimpleSi Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 Got my activatiion code from Sprite and restored all my SMS messages. In that case I'm not telling - lest I get another 1am sms... At that point, looking at SMS conversations I saw I had you down in my contacts as Domino Mike (I was looking for Mike something )) I've switched to Handcent as plain 'droid SMS was too startk to someone raised on HTC touchy-feely Si A
LosOjos Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I've switched to Handcent as plain 'droid SMS was too startk to someone raised on HTC touchy-feely Handcent is much better than HTC Sense messaging anyway I think, although it used to tell me my texts had failed 99% of the time (not since I've switched to Cyanogen though)
JJonas Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 another vote for Handcent SMS Tweetcaster is good as well
