What with Discover, Alternative Curriculum, Extra Curriular etc etc to sort before I 'go' (as well as trying to in-service somebody into how to write a Timetable and also how to Set up and Maintain SIMS to it's optimum), then I would never get round to looking at it. Maybe now you will see that I have made no attempt at all to denigrate the Software! Perhaps you should read me more on SupportNet. I suppose my sense of humour takes some getting used to! 1

On a more serious note, in light of the mac store, could the app be ported to work on a mac? Which would then do away with the need for using vmware/bootcamp/parallels and such like. I thought the market was calling out for platform and browser independent solutions. Isn't this what the magical "Cloud" is all about?

It's not cloud of course, but it does work across the Interwebs as well as local networks. I'm nothing to do with the company in any way, but I don't want to be accused of spamming so you'll have to scroll up to see it. Believed. I tested it last year, it works really well and is cheap, giving access to assessment for grades / report writing too. Very fast. They also have a parental access portal, which can be a hosted solution (so in a type of cloud depending on your definition!) - MCAS. Always like their interface, and ease of use.

There will be versions of Emerge (iphone app to access sims data) on other platforms including android this year, before the next bett. This is being worked on now. 2. You don't need any other Groupcall software to use Emerge, so if you are using schoolcomms, intouch or any other school messaging system, it has no impact on that. 3. Microsoft is out with its first official sales number for the new Windows Phone 7 smartphones: 1.5 million in six weeks. The number was revealed by Achim Berg, vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones, in a Q&A posted to Microsoft’s website. Thanks, to answer your questions.. 1. Cant answer in detail at the moment. What I can say is that the security on Emerge for the iPhone was our top consideration, there is no point doing something like this unless you feel VERY comfortable with the security of pupil data. This same thinking is being applied to the Android version. 2. The Xporter/Emerge Server ("management/comms software") is the school end of the solution, it needs a live connection to SIMS (i.e. installed on a machine with SIMS installed). 3. The mac version is not browser based, it is a native mac app. It is very much in our plans to have access to accessment soon. Emerge was designed as a framework, so its very extendable without having to revert to a developer. Hope that helps. Lawrence 1

They've said they're not putting as much effort into it but they're still working on it. They XAML system is being used all over the place, in WPF, on WP7 phones and in new frameworks and projects that MS are working on. So, even if they do go crazy and kill silverlight, XAML will still live on. 1

Open standards will continue to improve, but they take about 10 years longer generally to appear in a stable and used format. HTML5 is not expected to be fully finished as a spec until 2012, and full implementations of it aren't expected until 2022! Whereas, look at what Flash and Silverlight offer here and now.

I've yet to come across one that doesn't.

I've yet to come across one that doesn't. They could do it all in Jquery (free, easy to use) in half the code and it would load twice as quick. The only thing flash is (reasonably) good for is showing videos. Sorry but you'll be hard pressed to find any web developer who really disagrees with that sentiment.

I think there's a crossed wire here.. Scholarpack, you're saying there's better ways of doing things - true Localzuk is saying that people are still using flash - also true, especially in the education market.
