fox1977 Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Hi there, I need to get our backups syncronised between our main and DR site. We have two qnap devices and we have tried the inbuilt replication but the management isn't to great. The nas software was hammering the upload on our connection and causing the internet to crawl. We need something to syncronise the vmware backup repositories (500gb+) with something that allows us to manage the bandwidth allocation. I need to set the transfer not to use all of the available upload. Any recommendations?
Domino Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Are you using windows servers? If so DFS is probably your best option, as its built in, and reasonably reliable in the 2008 r2 version.
fox1977 Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 I'm looking at replicating the data to and from a QNAP device. DFS does tick all the boxes but difficult to implement between my NAS boxes. I'm going down the route of scheduled FTP jobs (seems the easiest at the moment). I was looking at torrent files but takes an age to build the torrent due to the size of the files. Now just need to find an FTP client that runs as a service (for scheduling) and could email me reports in the event of a failed job.

pete Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Is rate-limiting at the router an option? Say between 8pm -> 6am, let the QNAP use 95% of the bandwidth. 6am - 8pm restrict it to whatever's a decent balance between usability and throughput?

It meets most of our requirements it is missing one vital feature, a progress/status update. The scheduling functions are passed off to the windows scheduled task and other than an email at the end of the job we cannot see where it is upto. Anyone any recommendations for any FTP software that meets the following requirements: - runs as a service - ability to schedule jobs - set bandwidth limits (preferably to reduce the upload throughout the working day) Anyone recomend any products?
