Remote Desktop ?

Hi,

 

I'm going Nix on the laptop, going for ubuntu to start with. the last time I looked at remote desktop for linux it didn't support remote desktop gateway. does anyone know if this is still the case or a way to connect to a remote desktop via remote desktop gateway?

 

if not I can use the cisco VPN client, but I'd rather not. and the normal staff use the remote desktop gateway so i need to be able to verify when the report problems whether its the server or them.

 

if not no worries.

RDP V6 running in wine should have the support you need (i think) See WineHQ - Remote Desktop Connection Client 6.0.2600.0 for all the tests that worked/didn't work

GnomeRDP seems to support most methods, give it a try (it's actually just a GUI for various connection methods in Ubuntu)

i don't think I've got the right kernel headers or i haven't configured them properly its complaining about linux/autoconf.h

which version of ubuntu?

Are you using 10.10? If so, you can use the connection files you use normally now (the file extension escapes me right now though!).

 

Once you have installed cisco vpn client, right click on the network connections icon on the tool bar and edit connections. There's a tab for VPN connections and from there you can open the connection file (I've found that the most successful way of doing it)

vpnc into the wsgfl was the easiest and then remote desktop straight to ip of the server.

 

I'm killing the remote desktop gateway service soon anyway and getting xendesktop hopefully, be interesting to see how that plays under *nix

 

 

ubunutu quite useful on my laptop as all i do is work stuff, word docs, web browsing, remote desktop to school. but theres no way I'm putting it on my desktop. No support for any of my six sound cards and pro-tools doesn't run so thats a no no,

have you installed the 64bit version??

 

if so you can install qemu/KVM and for virtual machines etc if you need windows - enless you just dial in.

 

I prefer it on my laptop as it boots so quickly

haven't looked at kvm, did apt-get install kvm. and then kvm and it seems to boot a vm ?

 

but yeh the idea was to run a few windows vm's in kvm for that sort of thing. but I'm okay for day to day inside ubuntu now which is all good.

 

yeh dial in for windows work stuff.

 

my windows music stuff won't work though it needs direct hardware access and drivers which will never linuxed .

 

the linux terminal services client is a bit annoying though. ctrl + alt + enter doesn't always work, so sometimes you have to logout of the remote desktop to read something on the internet ....

 

evolution doesn't seem to want to connect to outlook web access but tbh the browsers probably easier anyway.

 

are you using chrome on linux.? I find the chromium crossover ???? crashes all the time but the proper chromium works nicely and is quicker than firefox. but you have to use firefox if you want the full outlook web access for exchange 2010.

Yeah i use chome - so much quicker then firefox - we are still on exchange 2k7 which only supports IE for full owa still ( i think). I have just installed the vpnc thing is quite good actually -

 

for kvm if you follow this is really easy you have pretty much done half of it

i'll look at the kvm tommorow. might put ubuntu on my desktop at work see how this goes.

 

can't get on the school website or remote.school.sch.uk when the vpn is active? i think it does dns lookups via the vpn connection while you are on it? might want to be careful with that not neccesarily information atomwide needs!

nah i saw the stand but didn't go up to them - i was looking at things like the interactive projectors from viewsonic with interactive pens rather then board - also finding companies which resell macs.

 

Also looked at Groupcall Emerge so PE staff can do their registers and stuff on iphone/ipad/itouch so we can get rid of there laptops

Emerge sounds good £299 for the first license then £99 per device after that. Also looking at replacing our School comms and truancy call with Sims Intouch for sending emails and SMS to parents etc - the email uses your servers rather then sending it off to another company to send out the email.

 

I did ask about an android version aswell which they said is likely to happen - I've asked them to email me more details so i can see it better. but after the first license has been purchased its just a case of buying an ipod touch at £160 and license for it at £99 means they can do there registers inside the buildings - they all have an office computer anyway.

 

The reason i asked about an android version was becuase you can buy a full tablet for £160 which they can do more on then an Ipod touch for the same price

can work over both wireless and 3g

 

we currently use SchoolComms + TruancyCall (and something else) but Intouch roles it all into one plus extra

 

I am defo more android then apple! I'm still not liking that we are looking at a suite of macs (probs 10) for next summer and the stupid price it is going to cost!

i've already said i won't touch them! we currently have 3 mac mini's for music which i don't touch! but we need to have macs to compete with the other sixth form colleges around for the music tech course and the others colleges all have them!
