Display board using a video screen

There has been much talk about using screens for display of work in entrances etc but I want to use one in the ICT suite to display work. What do people suggest we use to display the work, just PowerPoint or something else? Key is it has to be free as its part of a whole suite makeover (and boy does it need it, but of course theres no/little money). We can probably get the screen but its waht do we use to display the work which will be written documents, pictures, screen grabs, video etc.

We use a TFT mounted on the wall connected to a computer for our booking system/main welcome, info screen. Seems to work fine. Powerpoint on the main/info screen, and a WPF application running the booking system info outside our bookable ict suites

 

Though I think my boss has brought us a digital signage system for install during half term.
