Bridging routers.

I have been using a Billion 7300G just for my home network for a couple of years and recently it has started to drop out frequently so I bought an ASUS RT-N16, sadly I didn't research it thoroughly enough and failed to see the fact that it doesn't have a built in modem.

 

I am now trying to set up the Billion as a modem using bridge mode and then use the RT-N16 as an AP. I have got it to work before for a little while I was playing with the settings on the original firmware just trying to configure it using Static IP but I kept running into difficulties. I have since then flashed it with DD-WRT and now I'm getting sick of playing around and need to get straight to it.

 

How do I get these two routers to work with each other? Whether I bridge them or use some other configuration.

 

The Billion is configured with PPPoE.

I'd have thought you can just use the billion as the modem/router and connect the Asus to it via the fast ethernet switch ports. There shouldn't be any configuration required other than the wireless settings on the Asus.

That was my initial thought so I tried it and... Well, didn't really work... I'll try the Pure Bridged LLC mode soon and try then.

Make sure the DHCP server is turned off on the Asus. Your client needs to have it's default gateway set to the IP address of the Billion. Take it in steps, get the Billion conencted to the internet, Plug you client into the Billion and check you can get to the net, then plug the Asus into the Billion then attach your client to the asus and see if you can ping the billion then the internet.

I just saw "Assign WAN port to a switch" and checked it and... BINGO!
