We've just bought a load of new computers and monitors, both of which use either VGA or DVI. Does it make much difference to image quality which I use?

DVI will be better because it is digital. You also won't get any of those "adjusting image" type messages where the image jumps about momentarily each time the computer boots up.

DVI is definitely better in terms of detail and colour fidelity. As you have the choice, I'd go with that. Incidentally, in AV installations we tend to use VGA if we have to pass signals over longer distances because DVI isn't so good for that. For Computer and adjacent screen setups DVI is the best option.

I would add that make sure decent cabling is used on the installations, I have known of so many issues where poor display quality on screens turns out to be the cables and nothing to do with the screen itself

DVI as VGA is being phased out. DVI also offers higher resolutions.

aren't they both being 'phased out' eventually by displayport technology becoming standard on laptops and the like.

so i don't understand DVI being a better futureproof bet than vga at this stage. Unless it's the rare occasion where you need those ultrahigh resolutions. can't think of many.

VGA Max resolution is 1440x900 that it can do comfortably at 60mhz...anything beyond and you will get screen flickers (this is tested on over 20 different VGA flatpanel screens)

Until recently Ive been running a 1920x1200 and a 2048x1152 @ either 60 or 70hz with no issues. TBH i kknow what you are talking about but my guess would be its the gfx card rather than the interface as its supposed to be good upto 2048x1536px @85 Hz.

Yes displayport will phase both out but display port and DVI-D are both digital, so in theory it should make it easier in the future with only adaptors rather than full blown A/D convertors. This only applies when purchasing equipment with teh choice of one or the other, since the OP has both it really doesn't matter which he goes for.

I have a 1680x1050 60Hz display on my desk, and that is fine. That said, sometimes these 19" 1440x900 monitors do flicker (it seems to depend what you have on screen), so I'm wondering if DVI might help that.

Shouldn't it be DisplayPort now?

Only if your good with the insane 30% price premium on moniters that support them propperly or using problematic passive adaptors.

HDMI/DVI is the better standard between the two title options though.
