Offering more flexible pricing and bandwidth, inclusive of Becta approved filtering etc. There may be something in the pipeline if there is an appetite for it!

However, they didn't come with the value added which made the LGfL a much better option. I believe the new Virgin pricing will be better than the current pricing and with even more as standard. I can't see how 2,600 schools can be wrong. I have heard of a couple schools in other RBCs move away from the central provision and have regretted it because they just didn't understand the impact and thought they had a standard everyday internet connection.

eejit Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 (edited) I know a school who recently moved away from Synetrix - they went to Zen after being unhappy about their internet for years. It was much more expensive, but they are very happy with the speed and reliability. Many schools moan about their internet in London, but now is probably the last time they'd want to move, they are more likely to wait and see how the Virgin move goes - unless the alternative is very cost effective. If you'd proposed this last year then I'm sure that you'd have had a lot of interest. Edited December 1, 2010 by eejit
Edinlondon Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Not wanting to defend Synetrix (as I am no big fan) I believe the vast majority (and I mean 80%+) of calls about speed turn out to be either the fact that need to upgrade (as they are not on 10Mb and using all their connect) or is an issue with the internal school network and infrastructure. I believe with Virgin, the minimum connection is 10Mb.

You mentioned ISP, do you realise the LGfL aren't an ISP and what else you get with the connection (which you won't get with BT)?

We also use the Sophos anti-virus provided by LGFL, our current website and a few other things. BT do provide some of these but I would also need to look at getting some services from other companies. This is not something that will definitely happen it's just that the school want to look at other options and if there are any savings that can be made.

Fronter was the problem for us also, as soon as you leave the LGfL you loose the pricing that has been agreed for London schools and instantly the whole solution ends up costing more than staying with the LGfL.
