Poor signal form wireless DLink PCI card.

I have just been round a mates to install and set up a D-Link 802.11g Wireless LAN PCI Card in his second computer upstairs. He already has a laptop running on his wireless network. If i take the laptop upstairs in the same room and on the same desk as the Computer the laptop gets a 'very good' signal and work great. The DLINK PCI card in the computer is terrible. One minute is says it has a excellent connection, the next it has dropped out and won't even show up in the list of wireless networks. I have been pulling my hair out with it. In the finish i have left it not working.

 

Does anyone know of any issues with these cards or any settings that make it work better?

 

I cant understand it as the laptop works great so i know it is not a signal strength problem.

 

The router is a AOL SpeedTouch router.

have you set Windows to configure your (pc) network card? Just check what the laptop settings are.

Yep windows is set to configure, also the settings on the laptop are the same as the pci card.

Don't use DLink there are Cr*p

Does the wifi card have the the antennea connecte ddirectly to the card itself. If so check to see its direction of aim towards the wall at an angle remember that the walls seem alot thicker.

 

I have had this problem with a US Robotics pci card and even purchased a new antenna to be able to place it on a desktop. Still no good though and strange thing was that the weather affected my signal. In the summer and late spring tiime i will be getting a signal in the extension during the winter however i will need to move the machine. (there is a radiator in the room)

 

Windows is also very bad at signal strength detection. It can say it sees a wifi network and then not be able to connect because the strength is too low.

 

Also check different channels.
