Allowing Drives on desktop with Finder locked down

Hello there people,

I am in the process of setting up some mac suites, using 10.6.4 on the clients + server while bound to OD + AD.

One thing that is bothering me though is that the students and teachers need to have access to USB drives via desktop, to allow this, one needs to have the finder set to "normal" in WGM > Preferences > Finder. Only problem is that this allows student's to use the Finder and browse network shares and access places where they shouldn't.

My question is - is it possible to use the "simple" Finder option while allowing external devices to show on the desktop?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for replying, I have this set up so there are no restrictions on the media types, it's that the drives will not show on the desktop if the option for "simple finder" is used in WGM > Finder.

I haven't got OS X Server so can't test so not sure what else to do or try. There is some where , where you can add the mac address of each apple mac client, just wondering if you try this on one mac to see if this makes any difference
