Has anyone had any experience of load balancing multiple ADSL lines. Looking at a solution for a small rural primary school.

Sure - I used ZeroShell. I set up a ZeroShell machine to act as a gateway for a SmoothWall machine - ZeroShell can do load balancing, failover and VPN, which saves you having to buy the more expensive version of SmoothWall, or any SmoothWall VPN licenses. The ZeroShell machine had two connections to two separate, standard ADSL routers. We used two uncontended ADSL lines - around £50 a month each. In our case the ZeroShell and SmoothWall machines were actually VMs, but you might find it simpler to use dedicated hardware devices.

I've got a Peplink (Peplink - Dual-WAN, Multi-WAN Internet Link Load Balancing Routers) balance box (mid range one) which is hooked up to two ADSL lines (third WAN port empty at present), just used on a bit of an adhoc R&D network that we use in the office. Seems to do the job quite nicely and been happy with it. One thing to consider is potential contention at the exchange (if all your DSL goes to one exchange), so as David mentioned perhaps un-contended lines would be best. Bought our balance from Claritas Solutions a few years back they were very happy to lend us a unit to trial first.
