fafster Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 I haven't been on a single course (apart from portable appliance testing) since I've been here, so it's safe to say I've had nothing in the form of professional development. What I'd like are courses and qualifications that the school could fund in order to accomplish the above. I couldn't justify asking for certain courses as I'm not involved in managing the servers or switches, but I do pretty much everything else (basically the head technician in a department of one). Is ITIL worthwhile? How about anything similar that would be applicable to my position, preferably industry recognised? With the closure of our school on the horizon, I know I need extra 'stuff' to launch me into interview positions in the not too distant future. Cheers.
featured_spectre Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 Why do you not get to modify the switches and servers? I would ask for the following in your shoes... CCNA, MCSE, and Comptia Linux +
fafster Posted November 4, 2010 Author Report Posted November 4, 2010 We have an SLA with the local authority. They have a dedicated team that manage all the school servers and infrastructure centrally. Sucks as I was doing exactly that in my previous role, but there we go. I could ask for those courses, but there's little hope of getting on them. Especially as there's no budget (that I know of) for courses...
Kitkatninja Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 ...What I'd like are courses and qualifications that the school could fund in order to accomplish the above. Well I would rule out the likes of the MCSE, MCITP: Enterprise Admin/Server Admin, etc... If you're not managing the servers or switches, you're going to struggle with those exams (especially designing domains, forests, etc...). Added to that holding those higher level certs without the relevant experience can/may go against you. I would recommend looking at the following certs: 1. Vendor neutral certs like the: A+, Network+, Security+ & Server+ 2. Vendor specific certs like the: MCDST, MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Support Technician (for Windows 7) 3. IT Related certs like the: Project+, FITS, ITIL Foundation ...Is ITIL worthwhile? How about anything similar that would be applicable to my position, preferably industry recognised? With the closure of our school on the horizon, I know I need extra 'stuff' to launch me into interview positions in the not too distant future... See above As for if ITIL is worth it? Yes, any best practice methodology is a bonus, as you're in education FITS would be the logical choice, plus it does have it's foundation in ITIL. Other things that you may want to consider is the LCGI award from C&G's in IT and the ICTTech Professional Registration from the ECUK. -Ken 1

If you were doing those things, then yes, ignore what I said in my previous post and go for the likes of the MCSE/MCITP: EA/SA For alot of the qualifications, you do not need to go on a course. Get yourself the books/CBT's and use a test environment to "play" around with, then purchase some legit practice exams (eg preplogic, boson, transcender, etc) and sit the exam. -ken Edited November 4, 2010 by Kitkatninja more info 1

Kitkatninja Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 Have a word with the guys over at NeosIT in Worcester, they provide really good discounts on education training - the IT admin at a school we worked at recently used them for ranger and MS training and said nothing but good things NEOS IT Training Ltd I agree, I've been on two courses with them and they are good -ken 1
fafster Posted November 5, 2010 Author Report Posted November 5, 2010 What are your previous qualifications? The usual: GCSEs, A levels and then university for four years. All told I've had over five years experience doing IT in schools.
