Windows Server 2003 service pack 2 question

Forgive me if this is a silly question, i'm a hardware and desktop support man usually.

 

I've replaced a dead motherboard in a Windows 2003 server and noticed it only has SP1 on. How insecure is Windows Server with only SP1 on. It has all the other updates on, but the owner is worried about upgrading to SP2 as it all works and nothing has damaged it so far.

 

It faces the internet.

 

It's not a school server, but one of the IT teachers.

As SP1 is out of support, and has been since April 2009, I'd say he was pretty vulnerable.

 

You can take "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" too far

I didn't know if it's like XP where you can't get the latest patches if you haven't got the latest service pack. I've passed the info on, thanks.

At the time i upgraded arround 12 servers. They all went fine.

Its been out along time, any bugs in the service pack would have been fixed.

 

I would go and install it.

Erm, not sure, i just fix broken stuff. He teaches programming and such like so i'm guessing he practices stuff on it.

Why? He likes building stuff, and i have no desire to go poking around someone elses computer to find out what they do with it.
