itgeek Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Hi looking to move to a fully gpo environment, we currently use ranger for networks. Does anybody have a starter gpo for school locked down template? XP Pro Windows 7 computers. Thanks
featured_spectre Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Well the thing is, how much lock down do you want as we all have different levels...mine may seem lenient to some but strict to others so we need to know roughly what you are getting from Ranger before we start!
itgeek Posted November 2, 2010 Author Posted November 2, 2010 Thanks for the reply. Student lock down ie no control panel, desktop wallpaper change etc etc. For Staff a little more lenient. Ranger has a nice easy to use front end that has some gpo configured and templates. Thanks
featured_spectre Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 ok, well which version of server are you running, from the sounds of it you are running 2003 as I havent heard of Ranger working on 2008 (nor R2)...if you are planning on diong W7 GPO's, you are going to need to get Server 2008 R2 for the GPOs to apply properly.

Thanks I would advise on creating your own from scratch, at least then you will know your own network (Group Policies) inside out....its good for understanding and troubleshooting problems that might arise. itgeek Posted November 2, 2010 Author Posted November 2, 2010 Server 2008 with ranger for networks installed! What could I use for website monitoring any ideas?
featured_spectre Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Right well bump up to server 2008R2 for a start, some of the Vista only stuff does not take on W7...I learnt the hard way... Do you mean like a filter? Smoothwall all the way
strawberry Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Server 2008 with ranger for networks installed! What could I use for website monitoring any ideas? You need to think about what ranger does for you and what you need to replace. Website monitoring for instance doens't come for free. other thing you need to consider is that each machine will need to be rebuilt from scratch, ranger doens't just uninstall!.
Duke5A Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Server 2008 with ranger for networks installed! What could I use for website monitoring any ideas? Squid proxy setup for NTLM authentication to log traffic by user name, and SARG for parsing the traffic logs/formatting it into a nice to navigate web page. Both are in the Ubuntu repositories. I'm running this setup currently for student and staff traffic logging. If you don't have a basic knowledge of a Linux command line though, this might not be for you.
